*Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins of TLC is sharing her personal story in an upcoming episode of “Uncensored,” airing Thursday, March 12 at 8PM/7C on TV One. The episode highlights the singer’s journey from a life-threatening diagnosis to global music success as part of one of the most successful girl groups in history.
In the new installment of the documentary series, T-Boz opens up about being diagnosed with sickle cell disease and being told she might not live past 30. Despite those predictions, she went on to become a founding member of TLC, a group that helped shape the sound and culture of 1990s R&B and pop music, per the news release.
With candid reflections, the singer discusses the challenges of living with illness while navigating fame, personal loss, and the demands of the music industry. The episode also explores how faith and perseverance played a role in helping her push beyond the limitations others placed on her life and career.
Preview clips from the episode reveal behind-the-scenes moments from TLC’s rise to fame. In one segment, T-Boz recalls how music executives LA Reid and Clive Davis initially doubted the potential of the group’s hit song “Waterfalls.” Another moment revisits a difficult financial period for the group, when TLC confronted their record label over unpaid earnings and famously smashed promotional records with baseball bats before giving the remaining copies away to fans.
Formed in Atlanta in 1990, TLC featured T-Boz alongside Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes and Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas. The group achieved massive commercial success during the 1990s with multiple chart-topping hits, including “Creep,” “Waterfalls,” “No Scrubs,” and “Unpretty.” Their 1994 album “CrazySexyCool” achieved diamond certification, and the group has sold more than 60 million records worldwide.
The “Uncensored” episode presents a personal look at T-Boz’s story of resilience, offering viewers insight into how she overcame health struggles and industry challenges to help shape music history.
