*T-Mobile is taking aim at language barriers with a new Live Translation call feature that operates entirely at the network level, making real-time multilingual phone conversations accessible to virtually anyone.
According to CNET, the solution sidesteps the need for a smartphone and third-party applications, extending its reach to the most basic devices. Beta registration is now open to all post-paid T-Mobile subscribers. Eligible plans include Essentials, Experience More, Experience Beyond, and Better Value. T-Mobile has not yet announced which plans will include the feature permanently or whether it will carry an additional cost.
During a live call, subscribers can activate the AI agent by pressing *87* (star-eight-seven-star), and the feature also functions when roaming internationally. Only one person on the call needs to be a T-Mobile subscriber. The technology identifies the languages being spoken and delivers translated responses, supporting more than 50 languages.

One of the more striking aspects of the technology is its voice replication capability. “Our AI model can actually clone your voice in another language and preserve the intonation, the emotions and the rhythm as well,” said T-Mobile president of technology and CTO John Saw.
Saw also addressed privacy concerns, stating that conversations are not monitored and that AI development relies solely on internal test calls rather than subscriber data. “We don’t listen to customers’ calls, and [the AI models] are not trained on customers’ data,” said Saw.
On translation accuracy, Saw said the technology “matches the accuracy of all the established services” and complies with FCC 2027 captioning guidelines and ADA accessibility standards.
