*Sunny Hostin, co-host of “The View,” recently faced a life-threatening moment during a live broadcast when she unknowingly consumed walnuts, to which she is severely allergic.
As TooFab reports, the incident occurred last week when former co-host Debbie Matenopoulos, appearing to promote her cookbook GREEK.ish, brought Greek dishes for the panel to sample. Unaware that one dish contained walnuts, Hostin began eating, only to be alerted mid-segment by co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin, who asked, “Are those walnuts in here?”
Panic set in immediately. “As I’m eating the food, Alyssa asks, ‘Are those walnuts in here?’ And she says, ‘Yes.’ So I panic immediately,” Hostin recounted on Friday’s episode. She quickly scribbled a note on a light blue cue card that read, “I am allergic to walnuts,” passing it to Griffin, who reacted with alarm, saying, “Oh, no!” Hostin later admitted, “I panicked,” while looking to executive producer Brian Teta for reassurance.
The situation could have escalated, but Disney’s on-set medical team sprang into action. “Nurse Jan came in with a cape. She had an EpiPen. She was testing me. I had Benadryl,” Hostin said, praising the nurses as “superheroes.”
Co-host Sara Haines noted Hostin’s fear of developing hives, while Griffin described the moment as “scary,” admitting she struggled to read Hostin’s note but stayed composed. In a lighthearted jab, Griffin quipped she wanted to ask Hostin to “leave me the Gucci shoes.”
Hostin, who said such incidents are rare, admitted she sometimes forgets her allergy. “People ask me, ‘Are there dietary restrictions?’ And I’m like, ‘No,’” she explained, noting that her husband, Emmanuel “Manny” Hostin, and children often remind her.
The scare, which hadn’t occurred in a decade, left the audience and co-hosts rattled but relieved at Hostin’s recovery, thanks to the swift response on set.
