*The brutal world of “Squid Game” is returning for one last round.
Netflix has released the first teaser for the highly anticipated third and final season, which will premiere on June 27. With the new footage comes a deeper look into what’s next for Seong Gi-hun and the twisted competition that turned him from survivor to rebel.
Following the cliffhanger ending of Season 2, the new season picks up as Gi-hun is forced back into the games, seemingly as punishment for his failed attempt to overthrow the guards. The teaser opens with guards hauling his body in a coffin into the players’ sleeping quarters, suggesting he has no choice but to play again. Handcuffed and unable to vote, Gi-hun appears trapped—again.
While Season 1 had nine episodes and Season 2 had seven, creator Hwang Dong-hyuk revealed that Seasons 2 and 3 were written as one continuous arc and split to allow space for all the storylines. That creative decision explains the shorter episode count and why the wait between seasons is only six months.

This season will follow the second half of the ongoing game, as Gi-hun and his allies make a final push to take down the organization behind it. Tensions rise as familiar players—like the pregnant Jun-hee and mother-son duo Yong-sik and Geum-ja—face new moral dilemmas, including potentially competing against one another.
Outside the arena, Gi-hun’s ally Hwang Jun-ho appears to have found the game’s island, raising the stakes for an external takedown. The teaser also shows the return of the eerie VIPs, and hints at new challenges, possibly involving Chul-su, the male counterpart to the iconic Young-hee* doll. Their giant statues appear in the season two post-credit scene, teasing a new game setup—possibly based on the board game Jack and Jill.
Despite its global success, Hwang confirmed this will be his final season with the series.
“I’m so sick of my life making something, promoting something,” he told Variety, per Business Insider. While Netflix could pursue spinoffs or future seasons without him, this will close Gi-hun’s story for good.
