*Network executives at NBC are reportedly reconsidering Snoop Dogg’s position on “The Voice” following homophobic statements he made earlier this year.
According to journalist Rob Shuter’s Substack, the rapper is on “thin ice” with the network, which could impact his entire NBCUniversal deal. The controversy stems from comments Snoop made on the It’s Giving podcast regarding “Lightyear,” a “Toy Story” spin-off featuring a same-sex couple. He described feeling uncomfortable watching the 2022 film with his grandson, stating, “I didn’t come here for this sh*t, I just came to watch the goddamn movie! I’m scared to go to the movies now, y’all throwing me in the middle of sh*t that I don’t have an answer for!”
Network concerns extend beyond just his coaching role on the singing competition. A source told Shuter that executives fear advertiser backlash, explaining, “There’s genuine fear of advertiser revolt. This is a family brand. We cannot risk culture-war headlines.” NBC has already canceled Snoop Dogg’s New Year’s Eve special, which insiders view as a warning sign.
In response to the backlash to his “Lightyear” comments, the 53-year-old hip-hop artist partnered with GLAAD for Spirit Day on October 16. He collaborated with queer musician Jeremy Beloate, a former “The Voice” contestant, on “Love Is Love,” a children’s song for his animated series “Doggyland.” The track promotes acceptance of diverse family structures, including same-sex parents.
Snoop addressed his partnership, saying, “At the end of the day, it’s all about love — that’s what we’re teachin’ the kids with ‘Love Is Love.’ Partnering with GLAAD for Spirit Day just felt right, because spreading love and respect for everybody is what real gangstas do.”
However, sources suggest these efforts may not be enough to salvage his NBC relationship. “The New Year’s axing was the warning shot,” an insider said. “The Voice could be the execution.”
