*Snoop Dogg ignited controversy after sharing his discomfort with a same-sex couple depicted in Disney’s 2022 animated film “Lightyear.”
During an appearance on the “It’s Giving” podcast, he described his grandson’s confusion, saying, “My grandson, in the middle of the movie, is like, ‘Papa Snoop? How she have a baby with a woman? She a woman.’” He added, “‘They just said she and she had a baby. They both women. How did she have a baby?’” The rapper admitted, “I’m like, scared to go to the movies. Y’all throwing me in the middle of shit that I don’t have an answer for.”
The remarks drew sharp criticism from the LGBTQ community and transgender activist TS Madison, who appeared on TMZ Live. “Snoop is part of the problem,” she said, arguing his comments reinforce negative stigmas about LGBTQ+ representation in children’s media.
An Instagram comment, seemingly from Snoop Dogg’s verified account, appeared to address the backlash. “I was just caught off guard and had no answer for my grandsons,” it read, adding, “My bad for not knowing the answers for a 6 yr old. Teach me how to learn I’m not perfect.”
However, a representative for the rapper told The Hollywood Reporter the comment was “fake,” and sources confirmed to Deadline that neither Snoop nor his team wrote it. “It is a fake,” an anonymous source stated.
The “Lightyear” scene sparked wider debate, with producer Galyn Susman previously defending its inclusion. “We’re not going to cut out anything, especially something as important as the loving and inspirational relationship that shows Buzz what he’s missing by the choices that he’s making, so that’s not getting cut,” she told Reuters.
The scene in question, a brief moment showing a lesbian couple, led to bans in countries like Saudi Arabia and Malaysia after Disney refused to edit it out.
Chris Evans, the voice of Buzz Lightyear, also supported the representation, stating, “The goal is that we can get to a point where it is the norm, and that this doesn’t have to be some uncharted waters — that eventually this is just the way it is.”
