*Shedeur Sanders has been named the starting quarterback for the rest of the 2025 Cleveland Browns season, coach Kevin Stefanski confirmed to reporters.
As CBS Sports reports, the rookie took over the role after fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel suffered a concussion in Week 11 against the Baltimore Ravens. Sanders has started three games so far, posting a 1-2 record.
“He has constantly and consistently gotten better in each one of these games,” Stefanski said. “He’s been working very hard. I feel good about where his development is heading. He knows there are always gonna be plays that he could be better and those types of things, but he’s very intentional about getting better each and every game he’s out there.”
Sanders made a memorable debut in the NFL last month, leading the Browns to a 24-10 victory over the Raiders. CBS Sports noted that he finished 11-of-20 for 209 yards, with one touchdown and one interception. The standout moment came on a 66-yard touchdown pass to fellow first-year player Dylan Sampson. The performance earned national attention, including praise from President Donald Trump, who wrote on Truth Social, “Shedeur Sanders was GREAT. Wins first game, career start, as a pro (for Cleveland). Great Genes. I TOLD YOU SO!”

The win marked the first time a Browns quarterback won his debut start since 1995, and the first since the franchise’s 1999 relaunch. Reflecting on the game, Sanders said, “I’m just thankful. I think I showed a couple of great pieces. Some things I wish I could get back, but, man, a win is crazy. It’s amazing, you know, off of one week of practice! So imagine what a full offseason would look like. It could get dangerous. … But I’m just truly thankful that everything happened.”
Despite beginning the season as the third-string quarterback, Sanders emphasized his focus and faith leading into his first start. “A lot of people want to see me fail and … it ain’t gonna happen. It ain’t gonna happen,” he said confidently.
