*Whoopi Goldberg criticized Stephen A. Smith for suggesting that Serena Williams‘ appearance at the 2025 Super Bowl halftime show was connected to her former boyfriend, Drake.
We reported earlier that Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl LIX halftime Show made history, shattering viewership records and igniting conversation about its cultural impact. While some critics debated the performance’s messaging, one fact is indisputable—Lamar’s show was the most-watched in Super Bowl history, drawing 133.5 million viewers, surpassing even legendary Halftime Shows by Michael Jackson and Prince.
Williams revealed Tuesday on Instagram that her Crip Walk during Lamar’s performance was at his request. The tennis legend, who appeared during Lamar’s “Not Like Us” verse, said she joined the show because the rapper—who, like her, is from Compton—personally invited her to take part.
“Not Like Us” is Lamar’s diss track aimed at Drake—whom Williams allegedly dated in 2011. Her appearance sparked debate online, with many questioning if it was intentional. Smith joked that if he were married to Williams, he’d consider divorce over her halftime moment.
“If I’m married and my wife is going to join trolling her ex, go back to his a**,” the ESPN host said. “‘Cause clearly you don’t belong with me. What you worried about him for and you’re with me? Bye!”

Goldberg clapped back at his remarks during a recent episode of “The View.”
“Why wasn’t it, ‘Damn, Serena was great’? Why is it about some ex-boyfriend she hasn’t thought of?” Goldberg asked her co-hosts Tuesday, Page Six reports.
“All you can think of is her ex-boyfriend? I don’t understand. Why would you even think it was [about Drake]? Why would you think she’s not smart enough?”
Goldberg believes Serena’s Super Bowl moment was “not about Drake.”
“She got a chance to do something she wanted to do, and she went and did it,” she said, “and instead of saying, ‘Damn, that was kind of great,’ you’re bringing it back to some old stuff.”

Goldberg also noted that Williams is “happily married” to Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, with whom she shares two children.
“Stop trying to make it about somebody’s man. It ain’t always about somebody’s man. It’s about the person. Forget all that other stuff. We do,” she said on the ABC talk show.
