While Senator Fischer thanked Harris after taking her oath, her husband responded briefly to Harris’ congratulations before awkwardly refusing to shake her hand, as seen in a now-viral video below. The exchange drew attention online for its frosty undertone.
The footage shows Sen. Fischer (R.-Neb.) smiling while being sworn in by Harris for her third term in the U.S. Senate. During the moment, Deb repeatedly nudged her husband to stand closer to the VP as he held a cane with one hand and a Bible with the other.
“It’s OK, I won’t bite. I’m not going to bite. Don’t worry,” Harris tells him as he keeps his eyes on the Bible.

Senator Fischer shared photos of the ceremony on her X account, emphasizing unity in her role.
