As PEOPLE reports, the organization highlighted concerns about treating live animals as casual gifts. “Puppies are not plushies, and it’s a damn shame that Kim missed the chance to be a spokesperson for shelter pups and instead is being rightly slammed on social media for that,” Newkirk told the publication. She expressed disappointment over the missed opportunity to promote adoption from shelters.
The reality star has children North, 12, Saint, 10, Chicago, 7, and Psalm, 6, with former spouse Kanye West. Newkirk extended similar advice to Kim’s sister Khloé Kardashian, who added a new black Labrador retriever puppy to her household for the holiday. She suggested both seek guidance from animal welfare groups in the future.

Newkirk proposed ways for the family to contribute positively. “[They can] try to make some amends now by sending their kids to volunteer at a local shelter or paying for a local shelter adopt-a-thon or at least one spay day to help stop the growing homeless puppy crisis,” she said.
Kardashian posted Instagram Stories on Christmas, showcasing the four small Pomeranian puppies. She captioned the photo, “Each kid got a puppy.”
