Per OnyMy Health: “The majority of individuals identifying as symbiosexual tend to be extroverted and enjoy a high level of emotional closeness, affection, and consideration. They are also less prone to feelings of jealousy compared to those in traditional one-on-one relationships. This suggests that symbiosexual individuals may find fulfilment and attraction in the complex interplay of emotions and dynamics within established couples.”
Dr. Sally Johnson, an adjunct professor at Seattle University, led a research team to explore the prevalence of symbiosexuality in the U.S. through a survey titled The Pleasure Study, MadameNoire reports. This online survey included 373 participants who answered 65 multiple-choice questions about their sexual and gender identity, relationship practices, culture, education, and sexual pleasure, particularly focusing on experiences with couples.
The survey results primarily reflected responses from white, middle-class university graduates, with over 90% identifying as queer and 87.5% identifying as polyamorous, New York Post reports.
Johnson discovered 145 instances where participants reported feeling attracted to couples as a unit rather than to the individual members of the relationship.

“There is a diverse population of people who experience symbiosexual attraction, an attraction to the energy, multidimensionality, and power shared between people in relationships,” Johnson added.
Johnson intends to further investigate symbiosexual attraction to help the general public better understand how this sexual identity relates to relationship satisfaction.
“I hope that this work will reduce stigma in both monogamous and non-monogamous communities and expand conceptualizations of desire in sexuality studies,” Johnson said.
