*A second note sent to media outlets following the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie reportedly claimed that the missing 84-year-old woman had died, adding a troubling new development to a case that has captivated the public for months.
According to NBC News, the previously undisclosed note was considered potentially credible by investigators. It differed significantly from an earlier message that demanded millions of dollars in bitcoin for Guthrie’s return.
The note reportedly contained no request for payment for the release of her body and offered no apology, according to three people familiar with the matter who spoke to NBC News.
Nancy Guthrie, the mother of “Today” show co-host Savannah Guthrie, has been missing since February. Her disappearance sparked an extensive investigation involving local authorities and the FBI, but despite months of searching, investigators have yet to determine what happened to her.
A Mystery With Few Answers
Guthrie was reported missing after she failed to attend a virtual church service viewing with friends in Pima County, Arizona.
Authorities have pursued multiple leads over the past several months, but the investigation has produced few concrete answers.
The case has also been complicated by false tips and questionable communications claiming to provide information about Guthrie’s whereabouts.
In February, investigators released home surveillance footage showing an armed, masked individual appearing to tamper with a camera outside Guthrie’s residence. Despite the attention generated by the footage, authorities have not publicly linked it to a suspect or announced a major breakthrough.
The FBI previously noted that Guthrie had mobility issues and required daily medication for a heart condition, adding urgency to the search efforts.

The Two Notes
Local television station KOLD reportedly received both messages that investigators considered potentially credible.
The first note claimed Guthrie was alive and demanded millions of dollars in bitcoin in exchange for her return.
The newly revealed second note painted a much darker picture.
According to NBC News’ sources, the message indicated that Guthrie had died but did not include instructions for recovering a body or any request for payment.
However, investigators have not publicly disclosed who sent either note, whether the messages are connected, or whether they have been able to verify any of the claims contained within them.
As a result, authorities have not confirmed that the contents of either note are accurate, and the messages remain just one piece of a larger investigation that continues to unfold.
Savannah Guthrie’s Emotional Plea
While the latest development has intensified public interest in the case, Savannah Guthrie said her family has been living with uncertainty every day since her mother’s disappearance.
Speaking on the “Today” show Tuesday, the veteran journalist acknowledged that the information contained in the second note may be new to the public, but not to her family.
“This is the life that my sister lives, that I live, that my brother lives, that our extended families live, that our children live every day,” she said.
Guthrie became visibly emotional as she urged anyone with information to come forward.
“We are in agony. And we cannot be at peace,” she said.
The television host also reminded viewers that a reward remains available and that tips can be submitted anonymously.
“So, please, if you’re watching, no matter how small, the reward is there. You can tell us. It can be anonymous. Please do the right thing for us, for our family, for our children. And we love our mom, and we’ll never stop looking for her, never.”
A Family Still Searching
The Guthrie family has made several public appeals since Nancy Guthrie vanished earlier this year.
According to NBC News, after the second note was received, Savannah Guthrie and her siblings shared a video message directed at the person or people who may have information about their mother’s whereabouts.
“We received your message, and we understand,” Guthrie said in the video. “We beg you now to return our mother to us so that we can celebrate with her.”
“This is the only way we will have peace. This is very valuable to us, and we will pay.”
For now, investigators continue to pursue leads while the Guthrie family searches for answers in a case that remains one of the year’s most baffling mysteries.
