*A once-close friendship between Mary J. Blige and stylist Misa Hylton has unraveled into a high-stakes legal battle, with Hylton filing a $5 million lawsuit against the R&B icon on April 28.
Joined by rapper Vado as a co-plaintiff, Hylton accuses Blige of deliberately derailing Vado’s career to force him to sever ties with her agency, M.I.S.A. Management. Blige, undeterred, is preparing a robust defense, with her legal team facing a July 28 deadline to respond, Hot New Hip Hop reports.
As we reported earlier, the lawsuit claims Blige, through her company Beautiful Life Productions, signed Vado to a recording deal in October 2023 but shelved his completed album by July 2024. Alleged private messages reveal Blige threatening to block Vado’s touring and album release unless he abandoned his 20% earnings agreement with M.I.S.A.
Hylton also alleges that Blige’s boyfriend and security chief pressured Vado to sign a new management deal, warning of lost opportunities if he remained with Hylton’s agency. Beyond this, Hylton claims Blige failed to pay for past styling services, adding fuel to the dispute.
Hylton, who shaped Blige’s iconic “hip-hop glam” aesthetic in the 1990s, was once so close to Blige that the singer became godmother to Hylton’s son, Justin Combs. Fans on X speculate that Sean “Diddy” Combs, Justin’s father, may have played a role in their fallout, though no evidence supports this.

The lawsuit seeks damages for breach of contract, emotional distress, and interference with business relationships, alongside an injunction to prevent Blige from targeting M.I.S.A.’s future deals.
Neither Blige nor Vado has commented publicly on the lawsuit. Blige is currently busy on her “For My Fans Tour” alongside NE-YO and Mario.
