*Deion Sanders faced one of the hardest years of his life in 2025, and he did not want the woman he loved to feel trapped in it with him.
The Colorado Buffaloes head coach gave his partner of a year, actress Karrueche Tran, permission to exit their relationship as he worked through a serious cancer diagnosis. The couple addressed that moment in a video released by Deion Sanders Jr., offering a rare glimpse into how they navigated an incredibly difficult season together.
“This man told me, ‘You don’t have to stay. You don’t have to deal with it,'” Tran said in the video.
For Sanders, the gesture was less about doubt and more about a fundamental shift in perspective that his illness brought on. “What I went through last year, it triggered something in me to start living. I gave you your out,” he said.

Tran pushed back on the idea that leaving was ever a real option for her. She described the experience as mentally grueling but said her character would not allow her to take the easier road. “If I (had) dipped, I would’ve taken the easy way out,” she said. “It was hard, it was difficult mentally to see you go through that struggle. But we made it work.”
Sanders went public with his recovery last July, disclosing that he had beaten bladder cancer after undergoing a procedure that involved removing the organ entirely and constructing a new prosthetic one in its place.
Tran’s willingness to stay through the storm says as much about her as it does about the foundation they have built together.
