*Dr. Kerri Moseley-Hobbs, executive director of the More Than a Fraction Foundation, shares commentary on the PBS documentary Resolved to Live and Die: The Revolutionary Roots of Southwest Virginia, airing now before the premiere of Ken Burns’ The American Revolution. The documentary was presented with Blue Ridge PBS, PBS Appalachia, Virginia, the Wilderness Road Regional Museum, and the Willowbrook Jackson/Umberger Homestead Museum, in conjunction with the VA250. It tells of the Fincastle Resolution and how it likely inspired the Revolutionary War and the later Declaration of Independence.
The More Than a Fraction Foundation was launched after the publication of a creative nonfiction book on the Fractions who were enslaved on the Smithfield and Solitude plantations, which is the land where Virginia Tech is based. The creative account of the Fractions’ lives is in this book titled “More Than a Fraction: Based on a True Story” (Amazon Books, Barnes & Noble, and Audible), spearheaded a deep interest in the experiences of the enslaved during that time and the experiences of the enslaved before and after the Civil War era. Soon after this discovery by Dr. Moseley-Hobbs, in 2015, she was asked to join the Board of Directors of the Smithfield-Preston Foundation, which oversees the grounds of Historical Smithfield, where her ancestors were enslaved.
The More Than a Fraction Foundation, with her guidance, began helping the Smithfield-Preston Foundation and Virginia Tech highlight the lives of the enslaved Africans and the displaced Indigenous peoples of that area. The More Than a Fraction Foundation continues that research into generations of African Americans with collaborative and incredible support from learning institutions across the country. The scientific data the Foundation collected is shared by Dr. Kerri Moseley-Hobbs across the nation at colleges, universities, and civic groups.
In the Resolved to Live and Die: The Revolutionary Roots of Southwest Virginia PBS documentary, she shares her insight on how the enslaved may have viewed the events in Southwest Virginia leading up to the American Revolutionary War. She also provided commentary in the past PBS series VPM News Focal Point (Season 1 Episode 20), which won a Capital Area National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Emmy in 2023.
