*Comedian Deon Cole is urging Hollywood to rethink how it shares the spotlight, advocating for more diversity in leading roles and celebrating multiple voices on screen.
In an exclusive interview with REVOLT, Cole reflected on the legacy of Eddie Murphy and shared his thoughts on mentoring younger talent. Cole highlighted Murphy’s impact on his own comedy, saying, “Being diverse. His diversity was crazy, and he reached everybody. [Eddie] Murphy wasn’t a Black comic or a white comic; he was a comic for everyone, and he mixed it all up. So, I applied being diverse into my comedy.” For Cole, Murphy’s ability to cross cultural boundaries remains a model for aspiring comedians.
When discussing the next generation of entertainers, Cole emphasized the importance of respect and knowledge of those who came before. Referencing his comments on “Drink Champs” about popular streamer Kai Cenat not recognizing Black musical icons, he said, “Corrective criticism isn’t hate. Every time you try to tell somebody something, they say you hate them, and I don’t hate them. I’m just telling them what my thoughts are as being an OG.”
He added that while young talent are innovating and breaking new ground, acknowledging the contributions of legends is key: “I would love for people to give homage to those who came before them, like we’re doing with [Eddie Murphy]. We’re paying homage to the king.”
Cole also voiced a broader desire to reshape Hollywood’s approach to star power. “I would love for it to be more than a number one person. I would want it to be six number ones. I want ten people on screen, and they are all considered number one. Everyone is different, and you can’t have one person playing everybody.” He sees value in celebrating multiple perspectives and talents, rather than concentrating success on a single figure.
Through his reflections on Murphy, mentorship, and the need for shared recognition, Cole is calling for a more inclusive entertainment industry, one that highlights a variety of voices while honoring the contributions of past icons.
