*As the Cleveland Browns gear up for training camp, their quarterback room is buzzing with competition, but rookie Shedeur Sanders might not be in the mix for long.
With Deshaun Watson sidelined by injury, veterans like Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett are vying for the starting role, alongside rookie Dillon Gabriel, Sporting News reports. “I was told from somebody that’s in the building, that ain’t a player, it’s really coming down to Kenny Pickett or Dillon Gabriel,” said TJ Houshmandzadeh, hinting at the team’s immediate plans.
Former NFL quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick believes experience will prevail early on. “If I was a betting man, Joe Flacco is gonna go into the year as the starter,” he said. “He has history there, he has success there, and I think it’s a great story. He’s a guy that’ll bring calm, he’s the guy that’s going to be able to get them off on the right foot.” However, Fitzpatrick noted that Gabriel’s potential could see him take the field later in the season.
For Sanders, who is in his first NFL camp, the path to playing time looks uncertain. Analyst Emmanuel Acho called him “a camp body,” suggesting the Browns might not see him as a long-term fit. This has sparked speculation about a trade, with the Los Angeles Rams emerging as a potential destination.
Mark Sipos of Dawg Pound Daily wrote, “Matthew Stafford is still capable, but the Rams don’t have a clear succession plan. Sanders could sit behind him, learn the nuances of Sean McVay’s system, and grow into a potential starter down the line.”

A move to Los Angeles would allow Sanders to develop without immediate pressure, setting the stage for a future starting role when Stafford retires. As the Browns focus on their veteran options, Sanders could find his NFL home in the NFC West.
