*Bobby Brown paid tribute to his former mother-in-law, legendary gospel musician Cissy Houston, following news that she passed away on Oct. 7 at 91.
“Sending love and blessings to the Houston family on this great loss,” said Brown and his wife Alicia Etheredge-Brown in a statement with PEOPLE. “May she rest in Peace and Power. The Browns.”
Brown and Cissy’s late daughter Whitney Houston were famously married for 14 years before calling it quits in 2007. Houston died after accidentally drowning in a hotel bathtub at age 48 in 2012. Their daughter, Bobbi Kristina Brown, died at a hospice in July 2015 at age 22, six months after she was found unresponsive in a bath.
In 2016, Brown didn’t hold back during his candid conversation about his marriage to Whitney in an interview with 20/20. At the time, Cissy called his remarks “disturbing” and said, “I am deeply disappointed that this interview to promote the story of Bobby’s life seemed to be more of an exposé on Whitney’s life.”
We reported earlier that Cissy died Monday while under hospice care for Alzheimer’s disease at her home in New Jersey. In a heartfelt statement, Pat Houston, Cissy’s daughter-in-law, expressed the family’s profound grief over their loss.

“Our hearts are filled with pain and sadness. We lost the matriarch of our family,” she said. “Mother Cissy has been a strong and towering figure in our lives. A woman of deep faith and conviction, who cared greatly about family, ministry, and community. Her more than seven-decade career in music and entertainment will remain at the forefront of our hearts.”
Pat added, “Her contributions to popular music and culture are unparalleled. We are blessed and grateful that God allowed her to spend so many years with us and we are thankful for all the many valuable life lessons that she taught us. May she rest in peace, alongside her daughter, Whitney and granddaughter Bobbi Kristina and other cherished family members.”
In a statement, the Houston family has expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support and love from fans.
“We are touched by your generous support and your outpouring of love during our profound time of grief,” the family stated.
