She transitioned peacefully at her home in Newark, New Jersey, on Monday, October 7, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. ET, surrounded by her family while receiving hospice care for Alzheimer’s disease, according to publicist Gwendolyn Quinn.
In a heartfelt statement, Pat Houston, Cissy’s daughter-in-law, expressed the family’s profound grief over their loss:

We lost the matriarch of our family,” says Pat Houston, the daughter-in-law of Cissy Houston. “Mother Cissy has been a strong and towering figure in our lives. A woman of deep faith and conviction, who cared greatly about family, ministry, and community. Her more than seven-decade career in music and entertainment will remain at the forefront of our hearts. Her contributions to popular music and culture are unparalleled. We are blessed and grateful that God allowed her to spend so many years with us and we are thankful for all the many valuable life lessons that she taught us. May she rest in peace, alongside her daughter, Whitney, and granddaughter Bobbi Kristina and other cherished family members.”
Cissy Houston was born Emily “Cissy” Houston on September 30, 1933, in Newark, New Jersey. Her musical journey started in church, where she first showcased her extraordinary vocal talent.
She became a prominent member of The Sweet Inspirations, a renowned vocal group that provided backing vocals to legends such as Aretha Franklin and Elvis Presley, solidifying her reputation in the music industry.

While her work as a backing vocalist is recognized, Cissy also enjoyed a successful solo career. She released several albums that highlighted her powerful voice and unique blend of gospel and rhythm and blues.
