*Black men who despise Black women is a topic the black community is very familiar with.
For Crystal Valentine and Aaliyah Jihad, the issue took center stage as they shined a light on it during the 2015 College Unions Poetry Slam Invitational in April. According to Essence, the poets voiced their views on the Black men who make Black women feel undesirable in their poem, “To Be Black and Woman and Alive.”
“These Black girls need to watch out, ’cause white girls is winning,” Valentine and Jihad recited. “…I don’t f— with Black girls.”
“In college, this boy said that he didn’t date Black girls. Like his mama wasn’t a Black girl,” the women continued. “Like his sister wasn’t a Black girl. Like he didn’t drink milk and fat from a Black nipple. Like a Black woman’s body ain’t bend for him, ain’t spill herself to make room for him.”
Jihad and Valentine’s poem apparently went over well as the poets ended up winning the Invitational, The Huffington Post notes. To see Valentine and Jihad recite “To Be Black and Woman and Alive” check out the video below:
