*“Wicked: For Good” is set to soar at the box office, with early projections estimating a $150 million to $180 million debut across 4,000 North American theaters, Variety reports.
The highly anticipated sequel follows the record-setting opening of 2024’s “Wicked,” which earned $112.5 million during the pre-Thanksgiving frame. Universal projects a slightly more conservative $125 million for the new installment, though industry analysts remain optimistic given the franchise’s established fan base.
Directed by Jon M. Chu, “Wicked: For Good” reunites Academy Award nominees Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda. The star-studded cast also includes Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard, Ethan Slater as Boq, Marissa Bode as Nessarose, Bowen Yang and Bronwyn James as Glinda’s assistants, and Sharon D. Clarke as the voice of Elphaba’s nanny, Dulcibear.
Following the first film’s $750 million global box office and 10 Oscar nominations, the sequel dives deeper into Elphaba and Glinda’s fractured friendship. Exiled in the Ozian forest, Elphaba fights for the rights of silenced Animals while seeking the Wizard’s secrets. Meanwhile, Glinda, now a celebrated figure in the Emerald City, struggles with her estrangement from Elphaba as she prepares for a grand wedding to Prince Fiyero. A girl from Kansas arrives, further shaking Oz’s destiny and forcing the two witches to confront the rift that has defined their lives.
Produced by Marc Platt and David Stone, with executive producers including Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman, the film adapts the second act of the iconic Broadway musical by Schwartz and Holzman, based on Gregory Maguire’s novel. With a score by John Powell and Schwartz, plus new songs, “Wicked: For Good” promises a visually spectacular and emotionally resonant conclusion to the beloved tale.
“Wicked: For Good” arrives in theaters Nov. 21.
