*Whoopi Goldberg recently opened up about her experiences with marriage, making it clear that while she had no complaints about her sex life, the institution of marriage itself was not enjoyable for her.
The 69-year-old actress shared her thoughts during Thursday’s episode of “The View” while reflecting on her past relationships. As The Blast reports, Goldberg admitted that she never found marriage fun. She referenced an op-ed in which a woman credited her divorce for bringing “new experiences and great sex.” When co-host Joy Behar asked if she related to the sentiment, Goldberg responded, “It had nothing to do with the divorce, I was just glad to get the hell out of there.”
She elaborated further, saying, “I was always having great sex, I just wasn’t having any fun. So that’s why I don’t understand what [the op-ed’s author is] saying.”
When Sunny Hostin suggested that some women experience a “glow-up” after divorce, Goldberg pushed back, arguing, “Well, they don’t do better if they’ve been cheated on. You gotta take — these are not end all be alls.”
Goldberg has been married three times. Her first marriage was to Alvin Martin, with whom she shares a daughter, Alexandrea; they divorced in 1979. In 1986, she married cinematographer David Claessen, but the marriage ended two years later. Her third marriage, to Lyle Trachtenberg, lasted just one year and ended in 1995.

During a May 2024 interview on Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace, Goldberg reaffirmed that marriage simply isn’t for her.
“I’m invested in my kid. I’m invested in her kids. I’m invested in my son-in-law. I’m invested in my friends. But I’m not invested in a relationship that would require as much as having a child requires, and I know that that’s not for me,” she explained.
Despite her aversion to marriage, Goldberg remains on good terms with her exes.
Last year, she announced going on a “sex strike” to protest Trump.
