*A documentary chronicling the life and legacy of Whoopi Goldberg is in development, with Imagine Documentaries and Message Pictures attached as producers. The project is being described as the definitive film on the EGOT winner and will serve as an expansion of her autobiography “Bits and Pieces: My Mother, My Brother and Me,” Deadline reports.
Double Oscar nominee Geeta Gandbhir will direct the doc that will be anchored in Goldberg’s own account, supported by personal materials, performance footage, and decades worth of archival recordings. Among the film’s focal points is Goldberg’s effort to reimagine her landmark 1984 Broadway one-woman show “The Whoopi Monologues” for Lincoln Center.
Cameras will also follow Whoopi’s day-to-day reality — working alongside longtime producing partner Tom Leonardis, developing new theater projects and spending time with family including a new great-grandbaby.
“Whoopi Goldberg is a brilliant and groundbreaking storyteller who has shaped the landscape of entertainment for years,” Gandbhir said. “I, along with my partners Sam Pollard and Alisa Payne at Message Pictures, Whoopi’s long-time producing partner Tom Leonardis, President of Whoop, Inc, and Imagine Documentaries are honored to bring her story to life in this documentary.”
Imagine Documentaries president Sara Bernstein echoed that sentiment. “Imagine is thrilled to reunite with my friend and longtime collaborator the exceptional Geeta Gandbhir, Tom Leonardis and Message Pictures on this extraordinary opportunity to celebrate the singular icon that is Whoopi Goldberg,” she said. “The world needs more Whoopi!”
Per the news release, “The film offers an intimate look into the life of Goldberg née Caryn Elaine Johnson, the private, introverted, and deeply observant woman behind the audacious, boundary-breaking legend.”
Goldberg’s production company, One Hoe Productions, is also attached to the project. The “View” co-host is meanwhile moving forward with “Sister Act 3.”
