*Wendy Williams has gained a formidable ally in her legal battle, with renowned attorney Joe Tacopina stepping in as her personal lawyer.
Tacopina, who has previously represented high-profile clients such as Donald Trump, Alex Rodriguez, and A$AP Rocky, shared the news on “TMZ Live” on Thursday. While currently serving as her personal attorney, Tacopina is also seeking court approval to act as her guardianship attorney—a role that requires a judge’s consent. He is presenting himself as her “counsel of choice” and exploring multiple legal avenues to advocate on her behalf.
Tacopina’s involvement comes amid growing public support for Williams, as fans recently protested outside her assisted living facility, chanting and holding signs to demand her release. Tacopina says his decision to represent her was influenced by the documentary “TMZ Presents: Saving Wendy,” and he agrees with her claims that the facility feels like a “prison-like environment.”
Williams recently passed a competency test at a local hospital, strengthening her case to end her guardianship. She has already signed legal documents to that effect, and with Tacopina now representing her, she seems ready for a fight to reclaim her independence.
Williams, 60, has been under a court-ordered guardianship since 2022, initiated by Wells Fargo over concerns of financial mismanagement. In 2023, she was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and primary progressive aphasia—conditions that compromise cognitive function and communication.

She currently resides in an assisted living facility in New York, with her guardian, Sabrina E. Morrissey, filing documents that characterize Williams as “cognitively impaired, permanently disabled, and legally incapacitated.”
Despite these claims, Williams has been vocal in disputing her guardian’s assertions, adamantly stating that she is not incapacitated and is actively seeking to end the guardianship.
