*Karen Attiah, a long-time Washington Post columnist, revealed she was fired after posting on social media about the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
In a Substack post, she wrote, “As a columnist, I used my voice to defend freedom and democracy, challenge power and reflect on culture and politics with honesty and conviction. Now, I am the one being silenced — for doing my job.”
Attiah clarified that only one of her posts on the Bluesky app referenced Kirk, sharing his quote that prominent Black women, including former First Lady Michelle Obama, did “not have (the) brain processing power to be taken really seriously. You had to go steal a white person’s slot.”

The Washington Post Guild denounced the decision, stating, “The Washington Post wrongly fired Opinions columnist Karen Attiah over her social media posts.” The Guild pledged solidarity with Attiah, who had been with the newspaper since 2014. A Washington Post spokesperson, contacted by USA TODAY, declined to elaborate, noting the outlet does “not comment on personnel matters.
Charlie Kirk, co-founder of Turning Point USA, was shot dead during an event at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah, while speaking at his American Comeback Tour. A gunman on a rooftop 142 yards away struck Kirk in the neck during a discussion on mass shootings, and he was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. Authorities apprehended 22-year-old Tyler James Robinson as the lone suspect two days later.
As we reported earlier, videos circulating online showed Kirk, 31, seated under a pavilion, recoiling as blood poured from his neck, with the crowd scattering in panic. President Donald Trump was the first to confirm Kirk’s death on Truth Social, writing, “The Great, and even Legendary, Charlie Kirk, is dead. No one understood or had the Heart of the Youth in the United States of America better than Charlie. He was loved and admired by ALL, especially me, and now, he is no longer with us. Melania and my Sympathies go out to his beautiful wife Erika, and family. Charlie, we love you!”
