As CRE Daily reports, the company launched a pilot in Dallas and plans another in Bentonville, Arkansas, its corporate hub, to enhance delivery speed and streamline operations. This move underscores Walmart’s ambition to capture a larger share of the online retail market.
The dark store initiative aligns with Walmart’s goal to deliver to 95% of the US population in three hours or less. By repurposing physical locations for e-commerce, the retailer optimizes its existing infrastructure.
“We regularly test new tools, features, and capabilities to better connect with and serve our customers — wherever and however they choose to shop,” a Walmart spokesperson said, per Retail Dive. “Regardless of the channel, our goal remains the same: to deliver a fast, seamless, and engaging customer experience.”
Walmart’s e-commerce sector marked a significant milestone in Q1, achieving its first profitable quarter with a 21% sales increase, contributing to a 2.5% overall revenue growth to $165.6 billion. Operating income rose 4.3%, driven by efficient last-mile delivery strategies. Notably, deliveries completed in under three hours soared by 91% year-over-year, reflecting customer demand for speed. To sustain this momentum, Walmart is investing in automation and drone delivery while cutting costs, including a recent reduction of 1,500 jobs in retail and tech divisions.

These measures aim to maintain agility amid economic challenges and potential tariff increases. “We’re positioned to manage the cost pressure from tariffs as well or better than anyone. But, even at the reduced levels, the higher tariffs will result in higher prices,” CEO Doug McMillon said.
Dark stores are a critical piece of this strategy, enabling Walmart to compete with Amazon’s rapid delivery model. The dark store network could redefine Walmart’s logistics framework. By prioritizing speed and convenience, the retailer is positioning itself as a formidable player in the e-commerce landscape.
