*Vice President Kamala Harris debuted her own TikTok account on Thursday to connect with and woo young voters. Her account (@kamalaharris) amassed over 1.6 million within the initial 16 hours.
The first video posted to her account was captioned, “Thought it was about time to join!” In the clip, a voice off-camera asks, “Madam Vice President, are you on TikTok?” Harris replies, “Well, I’ve heard that recently I’ve been on the For You page so I thought I would get on here myself.”
Watch the short video below. It reportedly garnered 2.5 million views in five hours.
Harris joining the popular social media platform comes after Biden signed a bill in April requiring China-based ByteDance to sell its stake in TikTok or face a nationwide ban.
Many American lawmakers are concerned that the Chinese government fails to address anti-Semitic rhetoric on the platform, which is driving the push for a ban. Additionally, there are fears that China could use TikTok for espionage against U.S. citizens. Variety reports that the ban could take effect as early as January 2025 if ByteDance does not divest.

Meanwhile, VP Harris seems poised to secure the Democratic nomination after President Joe Biden withdrew from the presidential race Sunday and threw his support behind her.
Harris would become the first woman of South Asian descent to become a major party nominee.
“I am honored to have the President’s endorsement and my intention is to earn and win this nomination,” she said in a statement after Biden’s endorsement, NBC News reports.
“I will do everything in my power to unite the Democratic Party—and unite our nation—to defeat Donald Trump and his extreme Project 2025 agenda,” she added.
