In a recent interview with Traylece she spoke about her journey, her artistry, and the meaning behind Paper Plane.
Q: Traylece, tell us a little about yourself and your journey into music.
Traylece: “I’m Traylece NakedHeart. The name itself is a commitment to honesty. I make music from real moments and unorganized thoughts, both the good and the bad. Poetry came first. It was where I hid what I could not say and guarded what felt too fragile to release. Eventually, those words demanded sound. Music became the space where my truth stopped whispering and learned how to take up room. What I create now is unfiltered and deliberate, slow burns, open wounds, and true stories that allow me to be whatever I am in the moment.”
Q: Tell us about your latest single, Paper Plane?
Traylece: “Paper Plane is about desire taking the wheel, even when logic says slow down. It is about claiming your autonomy, owning your choices, and knowing what you want, but also realizing how easy it is to get tangled when you follow your impulses. The paper plane is movement and surrender. It is about letting yourself go while still staying aware of the edges. I want listeners to feel that push and pull, that messy, thrilling tension of freedom and consequence, all at once.”
Q: People often compare your sound to Erykah Badu. How do you feel about that?
Traylece: “I take it as a compliment, truly. I love that for me. Erykah Badu and Lauryn Hill carry this beautiful energy of freedom, soul, and gentle honesty. Jill Scott even warms me up like a cup of tea. I try to bring that same authenticity, but in my own way. My sound comes from my life, my choices, my experiences. I am just showing up as myself and letting the music speak honestly. If people hear familiarity, I think it is simply because truth has a sound.”
Q: Your visuals are very creative and cinematic. How do your videos complement your music?
Traylece: “What is funny is, I do not overthink it. I just show up as myself and focus on expressing the words. My visuals come from that honesty. They are cinematic because the emotion in the music is cinematic, and I want people to feel it, not just see it. It is all an extension of the story I am already telling in the song.”
Q: Your lyrics are very poetic. How does your background in poetry influence your music?
Traylece: “Poetry is everything I am. It is how I learned to process loss, love, and everything in between before I had the words to speak it. My music grew out of that same place. Every lyric is still a poem, it just has rhythm and melody now. It lets me be completely honest, unfiltered, and human. I do not hide the messy parts, and I do not clean them up for anyone. That is how people really connect with it.”
Q: What message do you hope fans take away from Paper Plane?
Traylece: “I want people to feel the power of choosing themselves, even when it is messy. Paper Plane is about letting desire lead, following what you want, and embracing the consequences that come with it. It is about freedom, passion, and the tension between instinct and responsibility. I hope listeners walk away feeling alive, unapologetic, and reminded that vulnerability and courage go hand in hand.”
