*Tiffany Haddish is sharing the inspiration behind her decision to hold a “self-marriage” ceremony, a moment featured in her new Peacock docuseries “Tiffany Haddish Goes Off.”
In episode five, titled “Here Comes the Bride,” the comedian walks viewers through how the idea first took shape in 2018 during a relationship she now looks back on with humor and clarity. At the time, she said she was dating a man she referred to as a “buckethead,” according to USA Today.
Haddish remembered one moment in particular. She says the man asked her, “How are you ever going to get you a husband if you don’t do what I tell you to do?” In her series, she responded with the realization, “And I was like, ‘I’ll be my husband. I could take care of me better than you could.’ ”
Reflecting on the turning point, she told USA Today, “I started realizing all these things I want from somebody else, I need to be giving to me… And if I’m able to do that, when that person shows up, it’s going to be so easy for us to come together.”
During the ceremony, Haddish walked down the aisle with a bouquet, vowed not to settle, and honored her Jewish heritage by breaking a glass. She even kissed a mirror as part of the celebration. She said the ritual marked a major shift in how she sees herself and how she sets boundaries.
“I used to not show up for myself, do everything for everybody else and not take care of me,” she explained. “And ever since I got married to me, baby, them boundaries — I see a difference in the way I wake up in the morning, and how I look in the mirror. When I look at myself, I see somebody who is whole, still fragile, but well taken care of.”
Even with her renewed sense of self, Haddish isn’t ruling out future romance. “Everything that I’m doing for me — if a man can do that better than me, that’s my man!” she said.
