*Comedian Tiffany Haddish recently joined community members to support Dulan’s on Crenshaw, a cherished soul food restaurant in Los Angeles. A fixture in the Hyde Park neighborhood since 1992, the restaurant faced closure last month after owner Greg Dulan shared he was struggling to repay a loan taken out for renovations and the purchase of two adjacent lots for parking, FOX LA reports.
“I’ve been coming here since I was a little girl, this has been a part of my family, this has been a part of my community, and anything that has been a part of the fabric of me, I’m going to show up for,” Haddish said during the emergency fundraiser. She also pledged to match donations contributed by supporters, helping to bolster efforts to keep the restaurant open.
The evening included a special recognition from the Los Angeles City Council, which presented Dulan with a certificate honoring his service to the community. “I’m just overwhelmed with emotion, and I’m in awe of just some of the things that people are saying and some of the things they’re doing,” Dulan said.
Haddish has a history of supporting local communities in Los Angeles. In August, she organized a giveaway at Super King Market in Altadena, covering grocery bills for hundreds of people affected by the Eaton Fire and others in need. “I called every rich friend to help me,” Haddish told KTLA, highlighting businessman Stephen Cloobeck among those who contributed.
Cloobeck added, “It’s an affordability crisis, and we’ve got to let everyone know it’s real. It’s real. California is not affordable, livable, or workable, and we’re showing everyone this is real.”
Reflecting on her own experiences, Haddish said she understands the pressure many families face. “I know how hard it is to feed a family, the stress of it, and the cost for food today is ridiculous. It makes me so mad,” she said. “I’m a human being, and I need to eat too, and I like to buy my own food, and I’ll pay for everybody in line behind me.”
Haddish’s efforts at Dulan’s showcase her continued commitment to giving back, ensuring both the restaurant and her community feel the support of those who care.
