With featured introductions by Emmy Award-winning actress Sheryl Lee Ralph, The Rhythm of Jamaican Art is written and directed by award-winning director John Campbell and produced by Campbell (JCINTIME, LLC) and Tiana Webb-Evans (Jamaica Art Society, LLC).
“My parents were born and raised in Jamaica. Art and the creative space have been a part of my life since I was a child,” says Campbell. “Celebrating these Jamaican artists was an invitation and calling I gladly accepted. Without a doubt, this was a dream and an opportunity to share a glimpse of the global spectrum of Jamaican artists and leaders from Jamaica and the diaspora.”

The film celebrates the history of Jamaican art — past, present, and future — through engaging conversations with the National Gallery of Jamaica Chief Curator O’Neil Lawrence, Ashley James (Associate Curator, Guggenheim Museum), and Dr. Petrina Dacres (Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts).
“I’m delighted to introduce ‘The Rhythm of Jamaican Art’,” says Sheryl Lee Ralph, O.J. “Jamaica is home to extraordinary talent, and this documentary offers audiences a unique opportunity to experience the brilliance of Jamaican artists both on the island and across the diaspora.”
The project also showcases the next generation of Jamaican artists from Jamaica, the U.S., Canada, and the U.K., featuring Nari Ward, Marlene Barnett, Phillip Thomas, and Paul Anthony Smith, with commentary from respected critic Rianna Jade Parker.
“Collaborating with John on this project has been a true honor,” says Tiana Webb-Evans, Founder and Executive Director of Jamaica Art Society. “This work is at the heart of our mission — to preserve our art history and amplify the voices of our artists and leaders who tell a more complex and dynamic story of our people. My hope is that ROJA will spark curiosity and bring vital investment into Jamaica’s art ecosystem.”
