According to Michael Ednie, MD, RD, a physician and registered dietitian, getting adequate antioxidants should be a nutritional priority. “Antioxidants play a huge role in disease prevention and healthy aging,” he explains, per Real Simple. “They’ve been linked to lower risk of heart disease, brain decline, diabetes, and even some cancers. They also support your immune system and protect brain function, especially as we age.”
While the Cleveland Clinic confirms that blueberries contain impressive amounts of vitamin C, vitamin K, and manganese, other foods can deliver similar or greater antioxidant power. Below are six alternatives worth adding to your plate.

Pecans
These nuts actually surpass blueberries in antioxidant capacity. A daily one-ounce portion offers cardiovascular advantages thanks to their vitamin E and polyphenol levels, while their healthy fat content helps reduce inflammation and supports mental sharpness.
Dark Chocolate
Selecting varieties containing 70 to 75 percent cocoa transforms dessert into a nutritional win. “Dark chocolate is rich in flavonoids and polyphenols, and a square or two a day can go a long way,” Dr. Ednie notes.
Artichokes
Cooked artichokes contain plant-based polyphenol compounds. They’re also a good source of multiple nutrients including magnesium and work beautifully in salads or blended into creamy dips.
Goji Berries
These berries offer substantial nutritional benefits in small servings. “These are an ancient staple that’s stood the test of time,” Dr. Ednie says. “They’re packed with vitamin C and antioxidants and work well in smoothies or as a snack. Just 2 tablespoons a day is a great start.”
Red Kidney Beans
These affordable legumes deliver polyphenols alongside a nutritional profile that includes protein, fiber, and key minerals.
Walnuts
The combination of antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids makes these nuts especially beneficial. “These are one of my top recommendations for brain health,” Dr. Ednie says. “Walnuts are loaded with antioxidants and omega-3s, which is a great combo for cognition, mood, and heart support.”
