*SUFFS – now playing at the Hollywood Pantages Theater – is more than a Tony Award–winning musical; it is a call to remembrance, a spark for reflection, and a vibrant celebration of womanhood.
For every woman who walks into a voting booth today with ease, SUFFS is a stirring reminder that this simple act was once a monumental battle, one waged with courage, conviction, sacrifice, and unshakeable hope.
This electrifying production turns the pages of American history with heart-pounding clarity, illuminating the women who refused to accept silence, who rose to insist on equality, and who fought not just for themselves but for generations yet to come.
SUFFS does not gloss over the complexities of the movement. Instead, it boldly confronts the social, political, and racial truths that shaped it. High praise is due to visionary creator Shaina Taub, whose book, music, and lyrics bring this era to life with brilliance and emotional depth.

The musical showcases the movement’s trailblazers: daring young strategist Alice Paul (Maya Keleher), Mollie Hay (Tami Dahbura), Carrie Chapman Catt (Marya Grandy), iconic horseback riding, labor lawyer Inez Milholland (played by Monica Tulia Ramirez and Amanda K. Lopez on opening night), and philanthropist Alva Belmont (Laura Stracko).
Women of today must reckon with the heroic efforts that led to the passage of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, which outlawed voting discrimination based on gender.

SUFFS also lifts the essential voices of Ida B. Wells (Trisha Jeffrey) and Mary Church Terrell (Danyel Fulton), who stood firm for the rights of Black women who faced double barriers in a world where victory for white suffragists did not guarantee justice for all. Their presence is a powerful reminder that the fight for equality has never been singular and has never been finished. SUFFS even gives a nod to Divine 9 sorority Delta Sigma Theta for their support of the suffragists’ movement in 1913. Voting rights for Black women and men would not be secured until the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
Musical numbers such as Let Mother Vote, Finish the Fight, The Young at the Gates, and Keep Marching pulse with the movement’s determination and resilience. And woven throughout the story is a truth that still echoes today: America is still growing into its promise of welcoming women into every seat of power, including the highest office in the land.
Shaina Taub’s achievement is groundbreaking. She is the first woman in history to independently win the Tony Awards for both Best Book and Best Score in the same season. SUFFS is a testament to friendship, fracture, unity, heartbreak, and hope. It is a must-see experience for every woman and girl—and for the men who love, support, and stand beside them.
