*After going viral for making an impressive full-court shot from the Warriors’ Chase Center tunnel, new footage showed that Steph Curry’s shot, while seemingly perfect, actually missed. A side-angle video revealed that the ball hit the net but didn’t go through the hoop. Despite this, Curry and the crowd celebrated, believing the shot had successfully made it through the basket. Meanwhile, Stephen and Ayesha Curry’s Eat. Learn. Play. foundation, in collaboration with Under Armour and Curry Brand, is deepening its commitment to enhancing sports opportunities for Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) students. According to the news release, this renewed partnership focuses on ensuring every student has access to quality sports and play opportunities from elementary through high school. By addressing challenges such as rising costs and limited funding for school sports, the initiative creates a seamless pathway for student-athletes to grow and succeed.
Youth sports participation in Oakland, as well as nationwide, has declined due to financial barriers, but this initiative is reversing the trend. Since partnering with the Oakland Athletic League (OAL) and OUSD, the effort has led to a remarkable 300% increase in middle school sports participation, climbing from 14% in 2021-2022 to 45% in 2023-2024, with projections to exceed 50% this school year.
“Sports and exercise have played such an important role in both of our lives, as well as our children’s lives, and we’ve seen firsthand how access to play and athletics can shape a child’s future,” said Stephen and Ayesha Curry. “Our goal with Eat. Learn. Play. has always been to give kids the tools they need to dream big and reach their full potential, and this is a major step toward making that a reality for every student in Oakland. We’re committed to making sure no student is left on the sidelines.”
Since 2021, the foundation, Under Armour, and Curry Brand have invested $3.6 million to provide free, high-quality sports programming, refurbishing basketball courts, and supporting coaches.

OUSD Superintendent Dr. Kyla Johnson-Trammell emphasized, “The increased participation is a testament to what can happen when organizations come together to put kids first.”
“Athletics and school sports are critical parts of the student experience across OUSD,” said Johnson-Trammell.
“They teach our young people countless important life skills including leadership, teamwork and dedication to a cause greater than oneself, preparing them to be college, career and community ready. We are committed to creating joyful learning experiences for all students across our schools. The impact Eat. Learn. Play. Foundation has already had on our athletics has been remarkable, with the involvement in middle school sports tripling in just the past three years,” she added. “Now, this added commitment to support middle and high school sports will help us provide these invaluable opportunities to more students than ever… We deeply appreciate Eat. Learn. Play. and Under Armour’s unwavering commitment to the young people of Oakland.”
This partnership is transforming sports access and creating lasting opportunities for Oakland students.
