*Spain has long seduced American travelers with the sun-soaked allure of Barcelona and the flamenco rhythms of Andalusia. But now, a quieter, greener, and arguably more authentic side of Spain is stepping into the spotlight. The northern regions—Basque Country, Cantabria, Asturias, and Galicia—collectively known as Green Spain, are making a bold move to bring their lush landscapes and rich traditions closer to the United States.
This fall, the four regions celebrated a major milestone: the successful launch of a direct flight between Bilbao Airport (BIO) and Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR). Operated from June through September 2025, the seasonal route exceeded expectations, with plans already underway to extend the service from May through September in 2026.
And that’s only the beginning. United Airlines has announced a new direct flight connecting EWR with Santiago de Compostela (SCQ)—a first-of-its-kind route providing year-round access to Galicia, the westernmost jewel of Green Spain and the spiritual heart of the legendary Camino de Santiago. For U.S. travelers, it means an easier journey to a part of Spain where Atlantic breezes, ancient pilgrimage routes, and Michelin-starred seafood coexist in one of Europe’s most evocative regions.

A Celebration of the North: “NORTE DIEM” in New York City
The vibrant spirit of Northern Spain is coming to life in New York City this fall as Sidra Smith hosts NORTE DIEM, an immersive cultural and culinary showcase celebrating the artistry, heritage, and flavors of “Green Spain.” The event will take place on November 19, 2025, offering guests a rich exploration of Spain’s northern regions through food, music, art, and storytelling.
Joining Sidra Smith is José Manuel Merelles, Tourism Director of Galicia, who will share insights into Spain’s forward-thinking tourism initiatives and the region’s commitment to sustainability and authenticity. Together, they will highlight how Green Spain is redefining eco-conscious and culturally rich travel experiences for American audiences.
The event promises a sensory journey through sight, sound, and taste, bringing together the soulful gastronomy, artistry, and natural beauty that define the region. Expect bites from acclaimed northern chefs, mesmerizing audiovisual storytelling, and an atmosphere that transports guests from Manhattan straight to the rolling green hills of Cantabria or the rugged cliffs of Asturias.
“NORTE DIEM isn’t just a celebration—it’s an invitation,” says a representative for Green Spain. “It’s about showing Americans that there’s another Spain waiting to be discovered, one defined by nature, sustainability, and authenticity.”

A Greener Way to Travel
Beyond new flight routes, Green Spain is reinforcing its commitment to sustainable tourism with The Ecotourist Reserve, a curated collection of eco-conscious travel experiences that highlight the region’s dedication to conservation and community. Travelers can hike through prehistoric forests, wander medieval fishing villages, or explore dramatic coastal cliffs where the Cantabrian Sea crashes against stone walls unchanged for centuries.
This approach offers a compelling alternative to mass-market tourism—inviting visitors to engage with Spain more intimately and responsibly. “From vineyard-to-table dining to coastal eco-lodges and rural homestays, every corner of Green Spain tells a story of preservation and pride,” the initiative’s spokesperson adds.

Spain’s Northern Awakening
As Spain continues to rank among the world’s top travel destinations, the emergence of its northern frontier as a distinct, must-visit region represents a shift in how travelers experience the country. The area’s combination of majestic mountains, wild Atlantic shores, Celtic heritage, and culinary innovation is redefining what it means to discover Spain.

With enhanced connectivity and renewed cultural exchange, Green Spain is opening its doors wider than ever. Whether it’s sipping cider in Asturias, tracing the Camino under Galicia’s starry skies, or exploring Bilbao’s modern art scene, Northern Spain promises a journey as soulful as it is unforgettable.
