Learn how to make Southern-style red velvet cake with a rich, moist crumb and creamy cream cheese frosting using Shaunda Necole’s classic recipe from thesoulfoodpot.com.
Ingredients
For the Cake:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- ⅓ teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- ⅓ cup softened butter
- ¼ cup mayonnaise
- ¾ cup sour cream
- 3 eggs
- ⅓ cup vegetable oil
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- ⅔ cup buttermilk
- 1 tablespoon white vinegar
- 4 tablespoons red food coloring (liquid or gel)
For the Frosting:
- 8 oz cream cheese (softened or whipped)
- ½ cup powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions
Cake Preparation:
- Preheat the oven to 350°F and grease your cake pan(s). If making layers, prepare at least two pans.
- Combine the buttermilk and vinegar in a small bowl and set aside.
- In another bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
- Cream the butter and sugar in a large bowl with an electric mixer for 2–3 minutes, then blend in the vegetable oil.
- Beat in the eggs one at a time, followed by the mayonnaise and sour cream.
- Stir in the red food coloring for a vivid hue, then gradually mix in the vinegar and buttermilk mixture.
- Fold in the flour mixture until fully incorporated, then pour the batter into the greased pan(s).
- Bake 25–35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool for 10 minutes in the pan, then transfer to a cooling rack until completely at room temperature (at least 2 hours).
Cream Cheese Frosting:
- Beat cream cheese in a large bowl for 2 minutes at medium speed.
- Reduce speed, add powdered sugar and vanilla extract, then beat on medium for another 2 minutes.
- Frost the cooled cake evenly. Optionally, garnish with chopped pecans or cake crumbs. Refrigerate for a few hours for firmer slicing.
Layering Tips:
- Frost the first cake layer lightly before stacking the second.
- Invert the second layer for a flat top, then frost the entire cake.
- Use a cake scraper for a smooth finish, and apply a crumb coating if desired.
This Southern red velvet cake delivers the perfect combination of moistness, flavor, and iconic red color, finished with rich, creamy frosting.
