*Renowned actress S. Epatha Merkerson has made a $1 million donation to Talladega College, Alabama’s oldest private historically Black college.
According to reports, the donation comes as part of Merkerson’s role as the keynote speaker at the college’s 150th commencement ceremony, held on May 4. Merkerson’s contribution is being hailed as transformative. Rica Lewis-Payton, the chair of Talladega’s Board of Trustees, emphasized the importance of the donation in a statement to CBS 42, noting that Merkerson’s gift “will have a profound impact” on the college.
“It ensures that this institution remains a beacon of light in the community that fosters the development of future leaders for generations to come,” Lewis-Payton continued. She also highlighted how privileged the college is to have “generous friends and donors” like Merkerson, whose support aligns with the college’s mission and investment in its future.
Merkerson, best known for her long-running role in “Law & Order” and her current work on “Chicago Med,” has been an advocate for giving back to communities that have supported her throughout her career. Reflecting on her gesture, Merkerson shared, “It’s important to give back. I have had a lot of luck in my career, and I came down here and met some wonderful people who embraced me immediately. I felt at home, and I love what this college has done over 150 years.”
In recognition of her generosity, Talladega College awarded Merkerson an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters. Merkerson’s deep connection to the college was further highlighted during her keynote address, where she acknowledged the institution’s rich legacy and the positive impact it has had on generations of students.

Merkerson’s career spans across television, film, and theater, with her time on “Law & Order,” in particular, making her a household name. Initially appearing in a single episode as a grieving mother, Merkerson’s powerful performance led to a full-time role on the iconic series, where she made history by becoming one of the longest-serving actors on the show.
