*Comedian and radio personality Rickey Smiley is getting back to his roots with his latest stand-up special, “Fool-ish,” premiering on Hulu May 30.
Known for his quick wit, Southern charm, and hilarious character impressions, Smiley brings a fresh yet deeply personal perspective to the stage in this long-awaited return to stand-up comedy. This special is more than just laughs. It’s a reflection of a veteran comedian who has seen life from all angles.
Drawing on real experiences, Smiley delivers a set filled with his signature down-south humor while exploring deeper themes like family, loss, and resilience. What sets this special apart is the heart behind the humor. Writer/director David E. Talbert inspired Smiley to create a special to remind people who Rickey Smiley is! Most of us were first introduced to Smiley on BET’s Comic View. We fell in love with his character impersonations, such as Little Daryl, the southern grandmother, and more.
During the premiere of the special hosted by Hulu, Smiley acknowledged Talbet for getting him to film his first special in years.
“I just had this thing where I said I’m cool, I’m comfortable in radio. I just wasn’t pressed to do one (comedy special). Then Dave said, “Hey man, I want to present you in a certain way. I want to put some cinema on your sh*t, and that’s what he did,” Smiley said.

Several of his peers came out to show their support during the premiere, including Sherly Underwood, Finesse Mitchelle, Loni Love, Luenell, and the legendary Tommy Davidson.
Luenell graced the stage and blessed the audience with a few jokes and sang Smiley’s praises.
“I just really admire Rickey’s grind. He’s been doing it for so long and just never lets up, no matter what goes on. We go back like Cadillac car seats and I love you,” said Luenell.

Set in a vibrant, energetic atmosphere, the special captures Smiley doing what he does best: telling stories that make people laugh, think, and feel. Whether he’s recalling childhood antics, poking fun at everyday struggles, or offering candid moments about personal hardship, Smiley’s authenticity resonates throughout the show.
“Fool-ish” is a comedic balancing act that only someone with his life experiences could pull off. Fans familiar with his work will appreciate the familiar voice, while new audiences will discover a storyteller who speaks with honesty, grace, and unapologetic humor.
