*Rep. LaMonica McIver (D-N.J.) finds herself under renewed legal scrutiny following a federal indictment announced Tuesday, accusing her of forcibly obstructing law enforcement officers.
The charges stem from an incident on May 9 outside the Delaney Hall Federal Immigration Facility in Newark, as detailed in a press release from the U.S. attorney’s office for the District of New Jersey. Authorities allege McIver interfered during an attempted arrest by federal officials last month.
Acting U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey Alina Habba addressed the indictment on X, stating, “As I have stated in the past, it is my Constitutional obligation as the Chief Federal Law Enforcement Officer for New Jersey to ensure that our federal partners are protected when executing their duties.”
The event unfolded after McIver, alongside Reps. Bonnie Watson Coleman (N.J.) and Robert Menendez Jr. (D-N.J.), conducted a congressional oversight tour of the detention center. As we reported earlier, the lawmakers said the visit was routine, but it escalated quickly due to the presence of protesters and aggressive responses from federal officers. A scuffle with ICE agents occurred as they tried to block protesters from entering. Newark Mayor Ras Baraka (D) was detained at the scene and charged with trespassing, though those charges were later dropped.

“After they finally told us to leave, and I told them I was leaving, they came outside the gate and arrested me,” Baraka told MSNBC. “So it looked like it was targeted.” His experience has fueled suspicions that the arrests were politically motivated rather than lawfully necessary.
McIver faced initial charges last month following her visit to the detention facility. “The charges against me are purely political — they mischaracterize and distort my actions and are meant to criminalize and deter legislative oversight,” she wrote on X.
On June 10, the congresswoman declared, “this indictment is no more justified than the original charges, and is an effort by Trump’s administration to dodge accountability for the chaos ICE caused and scare me out of doing the work I was elected to do.”
