*Questlove is speaking openly about a deeply personal topic that has lingered in the background of his life for years. During a December 28 episode of his iHeartRadio show, the Roots drummer reflected on his long-standing fear of fatherhood and the growing pressure to decide whether it will ever be part of his future.
While talking with rapper Open Mike Eagle, Questlove acknowledged that becoming a parent is something he has consistently postponed, even as he becomes more aware that time is no longer on his side. He described fatherhood as one of the most intimidating possibilities he faces.
“One of the biggest fears I have in life is becoming a father. And I’m not a father. And I have kicked that can down the road,” he said. “‘Alright, when I’m 33, I’m ready. All right, I’m 36.’ And all it takes is just like a day with one of Roots’ kids for me to be like, ‘Nope, I’m good. I’m good. I’ll wait till I’m 41. All right, 45. I’ll wait ’til then.’ And it’s time to s**t or get off the pot.”
Questlove also connected his uncertainty to long-standing career and financial expectations he set for himself.
“‘Cause in my mind, I always felt like, ‘Okay, I’ve got to make this amount of money and I’ve got to have these projects done and everything and then then I’m ready,’” he said.
The discussion underscored the internal conflict between personal fulfillment and professional ambition. As Questlove shared, the question of fatherhood is no longer abstract but an increasingly urgent decision he knows he can’t put off forever.
