*Paula Patton is living her best life, with a new film in theaters and an alcohol addiction in her rearview for seven years.
As Big Tigger and Jazzy McBee found out, the 49-year-old “Mission Impossible – Ghost Protocol” star, who recently stopped by “The Big Tigger Morning Show,” is determined to keep moving forward. Yet Patton isn’t afraid to reveal her struggles when discussing her alcohol addiction and the moment she let it go in favor of sobriety.
“I don’t think it was a rock bottom, I think it was more of an epiphany,” Patton told Big Tigger when he asked what her rock bottom moment was. “There had been a lot of chaos. I don’t think I knew how chaotic my life had been until I stopped.”
As Patton detailed, the stopping point came quietly at her home, according to Essence. Although she is unsure if it was “divine intervention” or something else, the moment was one that changed put the “Deja Vu” alum in a new state of mind.
“…Something came over me, I’ll never forget it. I was just looking out at my backyard and I was gonna leave on this job, and I thought, ‘I can’t live like this anymore,’” Patton explained. “I think if I had gone on that job and left, I don’t know what my life would be today…. It was just going on a fast-paced ride down… and I just knew I had to stop.”
Patton’s appearance on “The Big Tigger Morning Show” comes as she promotes her latest film “Finding Faith.” The LazRael Lison written and directed drama, centers around Faith Mitchell (Patton), a woman who finds her way out of the darkness and into the light after spiraling out of control when she is struck by a sudden tragedy.
Weighing in “Finding Faith,” Patton noted parallels between the title characters struggles and her own, particularly her battle and triumph over alcohol.
“I didn’t go through exactly what Faith did,” she told Rolling Out, “but I’ve known pain. I’ve numbed it with alcohol. And when I stopped drinking seven years ago, I began a whole new walk. I had to strip away everything — the career, the friends, the ego — and truly understand my worth outside of all that.”
“Finding Faith,” starring Paula Patton, Keith David, Nadine Velazquez, Stephen Bishop and Loretta Devine, is in theaters now.
