The New England Patriots are releasing wide receiver Stefon Diggs after one season, a cost-cutting measure that prioritizes salary cap flexibility as the team resets following its Super Bowl LX appearance. Multiple league sources confirmed the move to ESPN, The Athletic, and NFL Network today, March 4.
The Patriots informed Diggs he will be released at the start of the 2026 league year on March 11. The decision saves the team approximately $16.8 million to $18.5 million in cap space, depending on whether the Patriots use a pre-June 1 or post-June 1 designation. Diggs’ cap hit was set to jump to $26.5 million in 2026.
Diggs, 32, signed a three-year deal worth up to $69 million in March 2025 as a free agent from Houston. The contract structure allowed New England to move on after one season with minimal long-term penalty.

Despite the release, Diggs delivered a solid 2025 campaign, recording 85 receptions for 1,013 yards and four touchdowns in the regular season while helping rookie quarterback Drake Maye led the team to the Super Bowl.
Off-field factors also loom. Diggs pleaded not guilty to felony strangulation and assault charges stemming from a December 2025 incident involving his personal chef in Dedham, Massachusetts.
Following the news, Diggs posted a thank-you message on social media: “THANK YOU for a hell of a year. We family forever ❤️ @patriots.”
Cardi B Addresses Concert Speculation
The release comes amid continued public interest in Diggs’ personal life, particularly his recent breakup with Grammy-winning rapper Cardi B, with whom he shares a son born in November 2025.
Videos circulated on social media showing Cardi B delivering fiery monologues during her “Little Miss Drama Tour” stop in San Francisco in late February. In the clips, she said lines including “You can’t be out here playing with a b***h like me,” leading fans and blogs to speculate she was shading Diggs.
Cardi B addressed the speculation directly on X on March 2: “Dear blogs, when I perform a song, I always introduce the song with a lil razzle dazzle … not everything is a shot or personal. I’m actually repeating lyrics from the songs…Relax.”
She emphasized the monologues are her signature pre-song style, using lyrics or ad-libs to hype the crowd. She did not mention Diggs by name.
The couple’s breakup was confirmed in late February following the Super Bowl, with sources telling People magazine the split stemmed from a lack of trust and that Cardi B chose to focus on her children, music and tour.
Diggs has not publicly addressed the breakup or Cardi B’s concert remarks.
