*Patrick Beverley, a 37-year-old former NBA player, was arrested on November 14 in Fort Bend County, Texas, following an alleged domestic incident involving his teenage sister. Authorities charged him with third-degree felony assault for allegedly impeding breath or circulation during the confrontation.
According to Los Angeles Magazine, the incident began when Beverley’s 15-year-old sister left the family home without permission to meet her 18-year-old boyfriend. Upon her return, their mother, Lisa Beverley, contacted Patrick to come to the residence. What followed, according to law enforcement, escalated into a violent encounter.
Beverley allegedly grabbed his sister by the neck, lifted her off the ground, and choked her for 20 to 30 seconds. He then slammed her against walls and punched her in the left eye. The probable cause affidavit noted that the minor had injuries consistent with strangulation and included a quote from Beverley saying he would “be the family relative that kills” his sister.
Beverley was booked into Fort Bend County Jail early Friday morning and released that afternoon after posting a $40,000 bond. His release conditions require him to have no contact with his sister or other family members living with the child, and stay at least 1,000 feet away from the residence. He was also ordered to surrender firearms and submit to random drug and alcohol testing.
“We do not believe what followed happened the way it has been described, and we look forward to the opportunity to address that in court,” Beverley’s attorney said in a statement.
“Patrick Beverley has no criminal record,” the statement said. “He cares deeply about his little sister — a young lady, a minor. Given that, when he unexpectedly found her alone in the home with an 18-year-old man in the middle of the night, he was understandably concerned, as any brother would be about his sister.
Following the incident, Beverley wrote on X, “Please don’t believe everything you see on the internet.”
His next court appearance is scheduled for Dec. 15.
