*This Saturday, February 28, the intersection of Crenshaw Boulevard and Slauson Avenue in Los Angeles will be forever etched into history as it is officially renamed Nipsey Hussle Square. The 10 a.m. ceremony will honor the late Grammy-winning artist, entrepreneur, and community activist, solidifying his legacy at the very corner where his marathon began and ended.
The event marks the culmination of a massive community effort, recognizing Nipsey’s profound impact on the neighborhood he never left. The corner holds deep personal and symbolic significance; it is home to the family-owned plaza where his Marathon Clothing store stands and where the Neighborhood Nip Foundation continues his work.
From Community Petition to City Ordinance
While the support of city officials like Los Angeles City Council President Marqueece Harris-Dawson was crucial in making the designation official, the true driving force behind “Nipsey Hussle Square” was the people. A grassroots Change.org campaign, launched by community leader Najee Ali, ignited a firestorm of support that city hall could not ignore.
Najee Ali, recognized as the founder of Nipsey Hussle Square, reflected on the unprecedented movement that turned a neighborhood wish into a municipal reality.
“I want to sincerely thank Councilmember Marqueece Harris-Dawson for responding to our Change.org petition, which garnered the support of over half a million signatures,” Ali said. “That petition made history — becoming the number one music-related petition on Change.org.”
“It was truly an honor to lead this historic effort on behalf of Nipsey’s family and the entire community,” Ali continued. “Nipsey Hussle was not just a Grammy Award-winning artist — he was a humanitarian, a fighter against gentrification, and a powerful symbol of hope for the Crenshaw District, especially for our young people. I want to personally thank everyone who signed the petition calling for Crenshaw Boulevard and Slauson Avenue to be officially designated Nipsey Hussle Square. This was a victory for the community, for the culture, and for legacy.”

A Legacy Cemented in the Heart of L.A.
The new signage will stand as a permanent tribute to Ermias “Nipsey Hussle” Asghedom, who was just 33 years old when he was shot outside his store. His killer, Eric Holder Jr., was convicted of murder in 2022 and sentenced to 60 years in prison.
This latest honor follows a summer celebration of what would have been Nipsey’s 40th birthday, when Metro temporarily renamed the nearby Hyde Park Station the Nipsey Hussle Station. Now, “Nipsey Hussle Square” will be a permanent fixture on the Los Angeles map, ensuring that his name remains synonymous with the community he uplifted.
Attendees at the Saturday morning ceremony will include Nipsey’s brother, Blacc Sam (CEO of The Marathon brand), along with Council President Harris-Dawson, Councilmember Heather Hutt, and California State Assemblymember Isaac Bryan. The gathering at the southwest corner of the intersection will serve as a public celebration of Hussle’s life, just steps from where he was tragically killed in 2019.
New Music Fuels the Marathon Spirit
The excitement surrounding the street renaming is amplified by the recent release of new music from the late rapper. A few weeks before the ceremony, the first single from Nipsey’s long-awaited posthumous collaborative album with Bino Rideaux was released.
The track, “Reckless,” produced by Mike & Keys, serves as the lead single for the upcoming album Prolific, which is expected to drop this summer. According to his brother Blacc Sam, the album was recorded in 2019, right before Nipsey was killed, and has been carefully finished by his team.
The release of “Reckless” and the unveiling of Nipsey Hussle Square serve as powerful dual reminders that while the man may be gone, his message, his music, and his mission continue to drive the culture forward. The marathon most certainly continues.
