*Paramount+ will premiere the animated film “Smurfs” on September 16 in the U.S. and Canada, offering a family-friendly blend of humor and heart.
Described as “the funniest family movie this year” by Dave Morales of KRIV-TV, the movie follows Smurfette, voiced by Rihanna, as she leads a daring mission to rescue Papa Smurf, voiced by John Goodman, from the clutches of evil wizards Razamel and Gargamel. The story takes the Smurfs into the real world, where they uncover their cosmic destiny.
The film boasts a stellar voice cast, including James Corden, Nick Offerman, Daniel Levy, Amy Sedaris, Natasha Lyonne, Sandra Oh, Jimmy Kimmel, Octavia Spencer, Nick Kroll, Hannah Waddingham, Maya Erskine, and Kurt Russell. Directed by Chris Miller and written by Pam Brady, “Smurfs” is produced by Jay Brown, Ty Ty Smith, Robyn Rihanna Fenty, and Ryan Harris, based on Peyo’s iconic characters. At CinemaCon 2023, Ramsey Naito, President of Paramount Animation, shared that the film explores identity, asking, “What is a Smurf?”
Rihanna reflected on her experience, saying, “Getting to do animation is a fun journey for me.”
She added, “I’m usually front and center with everything with my likeness…but this was fun, I got to imagine, I got to show up in my pajamas in my third trimester, and be a blue badass.” The songstress also noted, “I hope this gives me a little bit of cool points with my kids one day.”
“Smurfs” joins other franchise titles on Paramount+, including “The Smurfs” and “The Smurfs 2,” alongside family favorites like “SpongeBob SquarePants” and “Paw Patrol.” The platform remains a hub for kid-friendly entertainment, including hits from the “Sonic the Hedgehog” and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” universes.
