*Attorney Antonio Moore looks at the larger context of NBA coach Chauncey Billups & NBA player Terry Rozier being charged federally in an Illegal poker case. Sports gambling is a problem. Moore has framed this around what he calls #Gamblepocalypse and has been ringing the bell since the Supreme Court legalized sports gambling in 2018
Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups is among those charged in an illegal poker operation tied to the Mafia, while Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier is among several people charged in a separate but related illegal gambling case, authorities announced on Thursday.
Both have immediately been placed on leave by their teams, the NBA said.
“We are in the process of reviewing the federal indictments announced today,” the NBA said in a statement. “Terry Rozier and Chauncey Billups are being placed on immediate leave from their teams, and we will continue to cooperate with the relevant authorities. We take these allegations with the utmost seriousness, and the integrity of our game remains our top priority, according to ABC News.”

“Today we are here in New York to announce a historic arrest across a wide sweeping criminal enterprise that enveloped both the NBA and La Cosa Nostra,” FBI director Kash Patel announced at a press conference Thursday morning. “As you now know, individuals such as Chauncey Billups, Damon Jones, and Terry Rozier were taken into custody today, former current NBA players and coaches. What you don’t know is that this is an illegal gambling operation and sports rigging operation that spanned the course of years. The FBI led a coordinated take-down across 11 states to arrest over 30 individuals today responsible for this case, which is very much ongoing.”
“We’re talking about tens of millions of dollars in fraud,” Patel added, calling the arrests “historic.”
The arrests of high-profile figures like Billups and Rozier represent a chilling validation of those warnings.
Moore’s #Gamblepocalypse framework posits that the flood of legalized gambling revenue and its pervasive advertising have normalized betting to a dangerous degree, blurring the lines between legal wagers and the illicit underworld that has always shadowed sports. The alleged involvement of La Cosa Nostra crime families in this case illustrates a key concern: that the booming legal market doesn’t eliminate illegal gambling, but can instead energize and provide cover for it, especially when insiders with access to non-public information are involved.
The NBA’s swift action to place Billups and Rozier on leave underscores the existential threat this poses. The league’s entire product is built on the foundation of its integrity; if fans cannot trust that the games are contested fairly, the business model crumbles. This case, alleging a “brazen sports corruption scheme” that exploited insider information, strikes directly at that trust. Moore has consistently argued that the relentless push to integrate gambling into the fan experience would inevitably lead to such a scandal. Now, with a coach and player facing federal charges linked to organized crime, #Gamblepocalypse is no longer a theoretical warning—it is a stark reality that the sports world must confront.
