*Gospel musician Moses Tyson Jr. is facing a $500,000 defamation lawsuit, and this from an unlikely source: the church. The good book teaches about turning the other cheek, but sometimes the slaps are just too much and need to be counterchecked.
In recent months, Tyson has been out and about on social media, accusing the “Church of God in Christ (COGIC)” of all sorts of evils. He claimed the church, headquartered in Memphis, removes pastors and steals church properties from the congregants.
In his whirlwind effort to hold the largest Black Pentecostal church in the world accountable, he appeared on “The Juice Radio Talk” show, featured on the “Official King Jives” YouTube Channel, among other platforms.
“I’m seeing a few churches being illegally taken,” Tyson told radio host Regina Ogbourne, “pastors being illegally removed.”

But COGIC insists church leaders follow all the organization’s rules and bylaws, and have done nothing wrong. They clarified this while turning to court, after turning the other cheek didn’t seem to work with Tyson.
This is the same church Tyson, 64, grew up in. He is a cousin of the famed singer Sly Stone.
“The church doesn’t have a problem with criticism. What it has a problem with is reckless falsehoods and untruths,” said Taurus Bailey, an attorney. “Lies. Things that are labeled as criminal in nature without any proof at all, just because of a personal opinion.”
“Well, he can post all he wants,” said legendary Memphis attorney Walter Bailey, the father of Taurus Bailey. “But he should not be entitled to perpetrate on COGIC with baseless and scurrilous remarks. Hopefully, at some point, he will find his way and back off. When people want to demonize the church, the church has no alternative but to step forward and vindicate itself from any kind of such accusations.”
But even as they turned to federal law to mute his comments, Tyson remained defiant. He sees himself as little David facing the mighty Goliath called COGIC.
Speaking to “The Juice” two weeks ago, he said, “I told the General Counsel, if you believe I’ve done the things you said, file that lawsuit. I don’t say anything I can’t back up with documentation, videotape, or court records.”
