*Morgan Freeman’s status of one of Hollywood’s most consistent actors remains untouched, with his newest film seated among his top-rated performances on Rotten Tomatoes.
The feature in-question is “My Dead Friend Zoe,” a comedy-drama featuring Ed Harris, Gloria Reuben, Thom Tran, and Utkarsh Ambudkar, in addition to Freeman, that has a 95% score on the film and TV reviews site.
The film, which debuted at SXSW in 2024 before its 2025 theatrical release in January, centers on a veteran named Merit (Sonequa Martin-Green), whose return to civilian life is haunted by visions of her friend Zoe (Natalie Morales), who died in combat, ScreenRant is reporting.
“My Dead Friend Zoe,” the feature debut of director and co-writer Kyle Hausmann-Stokes, generated an average rating of 7.7 out of 10 on Rotten Tomatoes.
Chances are that although the score could fluctuate with more reviews added, the numbers state “My Dead Friend Zoe” is tied with Freeman’s 1989 Oscar winner “Glory “as the ninth highest-rated movie starring him.
“When Merit attempts to open up about her trauma, the lighting reflects the PTSD through dimming and flashes.
The direction and score during these sequences are great as well, as they give us just enough to boost our anxiety before pulling back at the right moment to pique our curiosity with a dash of empathy ScreenRant’s Patrice Witherspoon stated in his 7 out of 10 review of “My Dead Friend Zoe,” labeling the film “”a great watch with family and friends.”
“It has just enough style to render it a memorable feature and the perfect amount of tenderness required to ground it,” Wilson said. “‘My Dead Friend Zoe’ is an indie gem equivalent to a warm embrace needed after a hard day. “
Compiling the top 10 Morgan Freeman projects, ScreenRant mentioned many of those movies on Rotten Tomatoes are documentaries that he narrated, including “March of the Penguins 2: The Next Step” (100%), “Meeting the Beatles in India” (100%), and “Born to Be Wild” (98%). If every documentary appearance or voiceover role is removed, “My Dead Friend Zoe” elevates further, tying for No. 3 as Freeman’s best-reviewed narrative feature behind his animated hit “The LEGO Movie” (96%) and Clint Eastwood Western “Unforgiven” (96%).
