*The first official trailer for the Michael Jackson biopic “Michael” has been released, offering an early look at the film’s scope and its portrayal of the late pop icon’s life. The preview introduces Jaafar Jackson, Michael Jackson’s nephew, stepping into the role of the global superstar in his acting debut. Alongside the trailer, new photos have surfaced showing Nia Long as Katherine Jackson and Colman Domingo as Joe Jackson.
Directed by Antoine Fuqua, the film assembles a cast that spans multiple chapters of Jackson’s life. Juliano Krue Valdi appears as a young Michael, while Kat Graham portrays Diana Ross, and Miles Teller takes on the role of lawyer and manager John Branca. The project seeks to present a wide-ranging portrait of Jackson both on and off the stage.
According to the official synopsis, the biopic aims to capture “triumphs and tragedies on an epic, cinematic scale – from his human side and personal struggles to his undeniable creative genius, captured by his most iconic performances.” Another description notes that “some of the most iconic performances from his early solo career, the film gives audiences a front-row seat to Michael Jackson as never before.”

Fuqua praised Jaafar Jackson’s performance in comments to Variety, saying, “It’s incredibly exciting to watch Jaafar bring Michael to life. There was such a spiritual connection when I first met Jaafar, who has a natural ability to emulate Michael and such a great chemistry with the camera.” Jaafar is the son of Jermaine Jackson and Alejandra Genevieve Oaziaza.
Nia Long has spoken openly about the pressure of portraying Katherine Jackson. “I’m playing Katherine Jackson. I was scared to death, Long said during Ally’s Money and Mindfulness panel at the 2024 American Black Film Festival, Vibe reported. She added, “I was so scared. But, I knew that God put me in that …gave me that opportunity because he thought I was ready, right? Because think about her journey and what she’s been through being Michael Jackson‘s mother. And I started to think about it and I was like ‘Wow, we do have things in common.’”
Long previously shared in a statement, “Katherine Jackson is an incredible pillar of strength and grace for the entire Jackson family. As a mother, she was selfless and endured forces beyond her control, yet still managed to help build a legacy beyond measure. I am honored to bring her voice to the screen and share Michael Jackson’s story with audiences everywhere.”

Reflecting further on her approach, she explained, “When you are a creative person, the work that you do is a reflection of who you are in that moment. I think the thing that I love most about my career is there is a core authenticity that is unwavering that follows every woman that I play, and that is very intentional.”
She also described her mindset during filming, saying she “put my fears to the side.” “I just prayed a lot and said, ‘God, let me be the version of this character that you want me to be.’ I was able to tap into some of my own experiences,” she said. “I was able to tap into the idea of loving your children so deeply that it just doesn’t matter what the world is saying about them.”
Producer Graham King of GK Films commented, “Beyond Nia’s incredible talent, I was deeply moved by her connection to the material and her commitment to honoring Katherine and the love she had for her son.” Fuqua added, “Nia has delivered iconic performances throughout her career. I’ve been a fan for a long time because her characters stay with you. I’m excited to now work alongside her as she pours all of that into Katherine Jackson: a woman who was the glue, the rock, and the heart of the Jackson family during its best and its most turbulent times.”
“Michael” is scheduled to hit theaters on April 24. Watch the trailer above.
