*Mary J. Blige has inked a new three-picture deal with Lifetime that will bring original films inspired by her music to the network.
According to Deadline, the first project in this expanded agreement is “Mary J. Blige Presents Be Happy,” named after her 1994 hit from the album “My Life.” The film marks the directorial debut of Gabourey Sidibe (“Precious”), and features a cast including Tisha Campbell, Mekhi Phifer, and Russell Hornsby. Campbell plays Val, a devoted wife and mother navigating the emotional challenges of an empty nest as her youngest child heads off to college.
Per the synopsis, Val “is eager to reignite the spark in her marriage when her youngest child leaves for college. Grappling with empty-nest feelings, loneliness and growing emotional distance from her husband Ross (Hornsby), Val begins to realize that her marriage and the woman she once was may be slipping away,” the description states.
“A spontaneous escape to New Orleans to support her pregnant daughter, Kayla (Zing Ashford), awakens long-buried dreams and passions and introduces her to Peter Mosley (Phifer), a handsome and charismatic photographer who sees her in ways she has forgotten to see herself. Reawakening her artistic spirit and rediscovering her worth, Val must face a life-altering question: is it ever too late to choose yourself and the love you truly deserve?”
“Mary J. Blige Presents Be Happy” joins Lifetime’s roster of movies inspired by her iconic music. “Mary J Blige’s Real Love,” “Mary J Blige’s Strength of a Woman,” and “Mary J. Blige’s Family Affair” starred Ajiona Alexus and Da’Vinchi, and collectively reached more than 6.1 million Total Viewers on linear, per the news release.
“Mary J. Blige Presents Be Happy” is produced by Blige’s Blue Butterfly Productions in collaboration with Monami Productions, Motion Entertainment, and Swirl Films for Lifetime. Blige herself serves as an executive producer, continuing her hands-on involvement in bringing her music-inspired stories to the screen.
